Fillon Calls for Republican Front

François Fillon, unlike J.-F. Copé and Nicolas Sarkozy, has called upon UMP voters to vote for the Socialist candidate rather than the Front National candidate if the UMP is out of the race. A clear gauntlet thrown down to Copé, his likely rival for the UMP nomination in 2012, and a clear rebuke to Sarkozy, his present "collaborator" at the head of the country.

No 'throwing down the gauntlet' here.
As I see it, just a game of 'Good Cop, Bad Cop'
AKA ''having it both ways'

Analysis here states that Fillon bets on Sarkozy failing in 2012 and he's thus "positioning" himself, as are Borloo, Wauquiez, etc, for 2017. Wauquiez is positioning himself against Coppé.
L'Elysée "vit très mal ces lâchetés", Sarkozy called Valérie Pécresse "ce n'est qu'une versaillaise" and stated that he'd show them all that he's the best.

If he had an ounce of self-esteem he would announce his not running for presidency next year and would concentrate on setting Fillon on track as the Right's candidate. But no, perish the thought. He will play the cornered lion instead...

As to "vivre mal ces lachetés", I find it rich from someone like Sarkozy...
