Public Intellectuals

Public intellectuals: some Brits wonder if they have them. A number of these folks seem to have BHL on the brain. We're in a more pitiful and parlous state than I imagine if he has come to be the standard by which public intellectualism stands or falls.

They have scholars over there, and not the least of them.
To take the best of both countries : let's say Fumaroli for France and Dawkins for UK.
We don't have scientific intellectuals in St Germain des Prés. No, Michel Serres doesn't count...

The verb is definitely 'falls', if BHL is the standard.

Actually, Art, I have to admit to a certain envy of BHL. It must be nice to be an expert on things about which one knows nothing.
