the impression I get is that after that initial drop in Sept/Oct.2007, from about 63% to 55%, Sarkozy was never able to rebound on the back of "events as they really happen". Just a long tale of slippage and fighting upstream. I'm stating the obvious I suppose, but this is news to me. great graph by Le Monde, btw.
