Lots of jokes about "dying from jumping off the ground floor balcony".
Since he's dead and the French love conspiracy theories, I bet lots of them will be flying by tonight.
UMP says the PS has no shame for criticizing the RAID; Hollande spoke before Sarkozy, something UMP judged unseemly. Not sure what either Sarkozy or Hollande said.

This reeks of a cover up.

We're supposed to believe that this guy targeted three Muslims of North African descent?

Anonymous 2, I beg to differ: he targeted four French soldiers, three of whom happened to be Muslims. Indeed, the fact that Muslims had joined the French army and accepted their duty as French citizens to fight on behalf of France, even if that meant going to war against other Muslims, might well be an additional motivation for a deranged assassin and not, as you suggest, a reason to suspect a coverup.

Just to be clear: the jokes aren't from politicians or officials. Just the sigh-of-relief-reaction of people around me when the news was known.
I see, above, that the conspiracy theorists didn't wait for the evening...

Given all the facts and details of Merah's "career" that the French authorities documented, it is highly likely that they tried to run him as a double agent. As the Americans learned in their debacle with their Jordanian double agent doctor in Afghanistan who was to lead them to Ben Laden, they can be outwitted and outmaneuvered with disastrous consequences.

Merah said in his France24 phone conversation that he had not been aware that the soldiers were Muslims but that in the end it did not matter, they were traitors to the cause.
