Racist EU Ad

A racist ad promoting the European Union has been withdrawn from circulation, but the embarrassment remains:

By now, the viral disaster of a European Union TV ad, wherein various non-Western martial artists confront a white brunette, who symbolizes Europe, has made its way around the internet a few times. The European commission recalled the ad Tuesday and apologized for any offense. Here it is, above, an ugly masterpiece of stereotypical dualities. Male to female. Armed to unarmed. Barbaric to civilized. Brute force to intelligence (the men menace with sword and muscle; the woman thinksherself into a circle).

Who can blame Sarkozy for his second thoughts on Schengen if THAT's the sort of people they're letting into Europe. There goes the neighborhood ...

I suspect it's meant as homage (horrifyingly inept, that's true) to Tarantino's _Kill Bill_. What a teaching moment.

As a black American citizen, I've seen much worse. I don't think it's in good taste considering it's a political ad, but in any other context, this ad would be awesome. In that light, I'm willing to give it a pass.

Curious. I saw it as a physical threat defeated by a united defense( Unions?). The women encircle the "problem", and everyone sits down at the bargaining table.

It's definitely a takeoff on Kill Bill, but that doesn't make the analysis above any less legitimate. Recalls another state-sponsored advertising misadventure, the famous "Danish mother seeking father" video on YouTube, paid for by the state tourism agency.
