An American observer comments on French politics.
I never attended a Le Pen rally. However I never doubted le Pen supporters were "ordinary" people. They just think France is theirs, and only theirs, and whoever is not like themselves should, at best, be a servant to them, or kept out altogether. They redefine what it means to be French. And since there's no definite answer to that....The fact men were in ties and suits struck me as odd, perhaps because where I live this connotes "privilege" or "elected official". At the same time, those were not the expensive suits you see bankers and national-level politicians wear. So, people in the top 10% but far from the 1%? On another note, I liked this article:http://www.telerama.fr/idees/presidentielle-j-3-la-campagne-vue-par-le-philosophe-marcel-gauchet,80507.php
