Doomsday chorus!
The doomsday chorus is getting louder. Read Martin Wolf and Joschka Fischer (h/t Bernard). Both blame Germany. The diversity of German views is actually wider than one might think, but expression of them is blocked by the apparent consensus within the current government and with the Bundesbank and ECB. Will this consensus crack if Spanish banks fail? Perhaps, but it may be too late to do anything useful in response.

Je refuse de céder aux sirènes de la catastrophe qui chaque jour nous assènent de nouveaux motifs d'alarme. C'est épuisant et démobilisateur. Cette pression est contre productive. Les symptômes de la crise masquent la mue profonde qui s'opère. Je suis persuadé que lentement un processus lourd est bel et bien engagé, en Europe, en France et même dans le monde. Comme on dit, les lignes bougent. Les convictions radicales s'effritent au profit de davantage de modération et concertation. On commence à s'accorder sur la prise en compte de problématiques plus larges, plus complexes, exigeant des mesures non pas spectaculaires, mais de long terme. J'ai entendu avec plaisir ce soir sur C dans l'air Jean Paul Delevoye exprimer avec calme une vision semblable de la situation. Même Raymond Soubie semblait plutôt en accord avec Philippe Frémeaux et Luc Berille de l'UNSA. Pas de grands mots, pas d'annonce d'apocalypse financière et d'effondrement social. Merci ! Un peu comme si après la tempête l'équipage du navire constatait les dégâts et peu à peu remettait le bateau tant bien que mal en état de marche vers un nouveau cap.

Fischer was a leader in several street battles fought by the radical Putzgruppe (literally “cleaning squad”, with the first syllable being an acronym for Proletarische Union für Terror und Zerstörung, “Proletarian Union for Terror and Destruction”), which physically attacked a number of police officers.
