French Skinheads Kill Sciences Po Student

Clément Méric, an 18-yr-old student at Sciences Po, was beaten to death by skinheads. Méric had been in an apartment buying clothes "appreciated by young militants of the extreme left and extreme right" when several skins arrived on the scene for the same purpose. A fight broke out between the two groups of clients, and Méric was killed. He was involved in the union Solidaires and a member of Action Anti-Fasciste.

From what I gather, Meric was not "beaten to death", he was punched hard, fell, and his head knocked a steel post. So there are great chances that he was killed during a brawl "sans intention de donner la mort". Many, many years ago, I participated in similar brawls opposing radicals and members of Occident and the GUD... We were ready for confrontation. We stood for our ground. It was infra-political. It wasn't much more than a street gang war. All together a few dozens of individuals were involved, less than a hundred. I don't buy none of the political comments on this sad story. These skinheads are dazed dangerous morons way below the level of politics and the "anti-fascists" militants are willing to physically confront them and chase them off the streets. Such accidents or worse will happen again.

To Massilian's point, this looks like another tragic "fait divers". Yet looking at the media over the past 24 hours, most pundits are prompt to paint this event as political.
Some even venture explanations on what setup the stage for this drama: the "manif pour tous"; the PS nursing the FN to weaken the UMP; the lack of political direction from the government...
