Prof. Meunier's comment about everyone across the political spectrum wanting to protect the existing social system served as a reminder to me that at a fundamental level France is missing a type of oppositional politics common in many - though not all - advanced democracies. If France were a consensual system like Sweden that wouldn't necessarily be a problem. But it's not. And so it relies on strong leadership, which even the most ardent PS supporter must admit is missing today.
