Renzi Dares to Say What Hollande Won't

From the FT:

“I prefer to have a France with 4.4 per cent [debt-to-GDP ratio] today than a France with Marine Le Pen tomorrow. This is very important for Europe,” he added, referring to the leader of the far-right National Front.
“We must give a message of comprehension for countries with problems,” Mr Renzi said.

Pardon my constitutional ignorance, but if Renzi takes an apartment in, say, Menton, or maybe Nice and commutes to Rome, would he be eligible in 2017 ...? No? Too bad. How about, as a 2nd best, someone LIKE Renzi, with Euro-cred and a few vestiges of Social-Democratic cred as well, someone like ... Pierre Moscovici? With major support from the Florentine Capo, and a small show of cojones in Brussels, couldn't he possibly edge out Le Pen (or M/Mme UMP) in the 1st round, especially if M/Mme UMP is poaching Le Pen's far-right supporters? After the previous, totally dispiriting thread (and following up on Fredéric LN's less despairing post), I'm just wondering ...

I think you mean deficit, not debt. A 4.4% debt-to-GDP ratio is the stuff of science fiction.

Hmm, I hadn't noticed that Tex, but I'm quoting the FT, including the parenthetical remark, so it's their mistake! They really should know better.

Pity, not Moscovici... he's the one who thought supply-side economics would save the day and reduce unemployment magically. o_O
