Department of Hoist by His Own Petard

Dept. of hoist by his own petard: People forget that François Fillon had lunch with Jean-Pierre Jouyet a while back. He asked Jouyet to have Hollande accelerate the various investigations of Nicolas Sarkozy in order to stop Sarko from winning the LR nomination. Now he complains that les petits juges are too zealous and that Hollande has staged a coup d'état institutionnel. Right.

Why on earth didn't LR take measures to stop this sooner? I understand they have no legal remedy but was every threat made? This is truly extraordinary political malpractice to have Fillon still in the race, and his wild hypocrisies. I was just about to ask what party worth its name would let something like this happen but then remembered, errrrmmm the party that brought us Bygmalion. They deserve to go the way of the US Republicans, who clearly stand for nothing and no one except perpetuation of their own power.

Alexandra, you're spot on, but I think others have pointed out the logistical challenges of replacing Fillon. Also, there's the financial factor to consider: They need a candidate, on the ballot, who'll win at least 5% of the vote in order to have the state reimburse part of his campaign expenses. I can't imagine Fillon would fall below that threshold, even now, but let's not forget Defferre in 1969. So it's in LR's interest not only to support him, however reluctantly, but also to help him achieve as respectable a score as possible.

@Alexandra
I believe the answer to your "why on earth" question is actually simple and...down to earth.

LR can do nothing to Honest Fillon, he holds them by the cojones, not the reverse. I already stated on this truly excellent blog that Honest Fillon would stay in no matter what on the very day this story broke over a month ago. Please consider:
- When HF won the LR primary, the Fillon2017 campaign received all the excess monies from the 4 million who participated in the primaries,
- all contributions collected during the campaign go to the Fillon2017 campaign, not the party LR. They have to beg Fillon2017 to give some back to finance the parliamentary campaign. As you may have surmised from revelations and events over the past month, Honest Fillon is a man who rather likes to stay close to his cash, shall we say, and keep it in the family,
- Clean Sarkozy, in 2012, went all out in a desperate effort to win back the electorate, and spent close to twice the maximum allowed legal limit in a presidential election (he is going to criminal court on that one). The effect was that he essentially bankrupted LR in this mad dash. Further, LR having done poorly in the 2012 elections, receive a much reduced official financing (that's the law in France). So they are still doing poorly in the financial area while Honest Fillon is very, very cash rich,
- When LR decided the rules for their primary, you could have been forgiven to think that they were writing a new constitution for the country. They made it such that absolutely no one but the selected candidate could choose to bow out. The poor, naive and incompetent LR boys and girls did not quite realize that they were selecting a candidate, they thought they were selecting the next President or maybe God.

So long as Honest Fillon wants to stay in (and he will if you ask me), they (LR) are stuck with him, he holds them by the political cojones which is cash. Honest Fillon will take them with him into the abyss and they will self-destruct. Good riddance if you ask me. Have a very nice trip to the abyss. If only MLP could do the same, that would be double happiness.

In the midst of all this, there is a piece of very good news. Our next President will be a staunch European and a man who understands deeply that without close friendship and trust with Germany, France can do very little in Europe. Germany has been seriously concerned by France for quite a number of years now. This will be from my point of view a very satisfying rejoinder to Brexit and Trump and a concrete proof of French sanity and reliability in the end.

@Bernard, good lord, this party and its epic money problems and even more epic entitlement problems. May this hasten their demise.

To be precise, FILLON2017 already has EUR 6 million from the primaries, and can request the remainder, namely EUR 3 million and no one can prevent it from happening. Further, Honest Fillon is president of LR and therefore has control of LR finance unless there is a coup inside the party.

In other news, Honest Fillon is still not bowing out, supported by his inimitable sidekick NKM and hardly anyone else. This has the makings of a very nice comedic political musical. I just wish I were talented enough to write it.

Dying to see how this rally goes Sunday. How has there not already been a coup inside LR, though? This is my original question and I still don't understand why. If nothing else these folks have to think long and hard about how their party is structured simply as a financial entity. Seems insane to me that Fillon gets all the campaign money personally if he was campaigning as the LR candidate. Though the leadership of the party does seem to be first and foremost about getting themselves and their friends paid.

My guess is that Sarkozy structured it this way when he thought he'd won.
Fillon is hoping for 200,000 people, a number repeated enough to make me think he believes in it despite more prudent organizers saying 50,000 will be a success. Some cities have had to cancel buses. Even LR supporters are angry.
And at this point, it's just too late. Whether Fillon or Juppe I'm not even sure the right will be in the second round, nor will the left. What a strange election.

After yet another resignation Fillon has a new campaign director, Mr Crikey.
