Vanneste Verdict Overturned

Christian Vanneste, the UMP deputy whose conviction for allegedly homophobic speech I discussed previously as an example of the divergence between French and American understandings of free speech guarantees, has had the verdict in his case overturned on appeal.

The verdict is not overturned " on appeal" but by the Cour de Cassation, which is much more important in terms of precedent on free speech affairs.

For instance, I don't think Brigitte Bardot could now be convicted as she has been for " islamophobia" when she complained about the cruel way lambs were slaughtered for the AID feast...
