Rabat-joie

Oh, man, this is really too much:

"The consumption of alcohol, and especially wine, is discouraged," say guidelines that are drawn from the findings of the National Cancer Institute (INCA). A single glass of wine per day will raise your chance of contracting cancer by up to 168 percent, it says.

And these past few years I've been laboring under the pleasant illusion (?) that a glass or two of wine a day is good for the heart. Selective reception time. I'm just going to tune this warning out. Without wine and cheese, what is life?

My favorite French proverb: Est-ce que la vie vaut la peine? C'est une question de foi(e).
[Is life worth living? It's a question of the liver. -- The pun is different in English, but it still sort of works.]

A public service announcement:

I saw that on the news, and, I have to admit I'm really surprised. I've never, ever, on any English-language website or magazine or newspaper, seen anything suggesting that _any_ alcohol is dangerous. Quite the contrary; like you, I've always read that one to two glasses of wine (or the equivalent) is good for us.

I'm very surprised about this "announcement" and am hoping that someone clarifies this.

That may be too much, but what's more amusing are signs that warn against the dangers of snacking. I'd lose half my daily calories!

Art, thanks for the video.
Opening a wine bottle with a hammer would be as un-French as a US President not wearing an Old Glory lapel pin would be un-American.
However, in the un-Frenchness Department, the Institut National du Cancer wins the biscuit.
Mon Dieu, we already have Sarko. And now no wine. La vie ne vaut plus la peine.

well, actually, I had heard of this in the mid-eighties from a cancer specialist. And I still like my glass of wine. Now, if a bit of wine protects you a bit from heart attacks and if you do smoke, than you should have your glass, if only to forget about what lays in store. Mignonne, allons voir si la rose...

I had heard that the studies claiming a glass a day was good for you were dodgy because they failed to control for recovering alcoholics in looking at incidence of disease etc. - i.e. a lot of apparently abstemious types who nevertheless suffered bad health were in fact recovering alcoholics.

Don't remember where or when I heard it but there you go.

I wrote a more extensive blog post on the Iron Chevsky wine blog here: http://www.chevsky.com/2009/02/health-benefits-of-wine-is-wine-good.html. Enjoy (if you can)!
