Methinks that Vaisse, in his total rejection of Huntington's thesis of civilizational blocs, arrives at a sort of dissolution of identities. Theoretically, that may all very well be true for the Indonesian peasant, laic Turk, Egyptian fundamentalist have little in common.

But it seems a gesture of recognition on the part of Obama that there is a Muslim world, and individual Muslims who identify with and empathize with Palestinians, Iraqis, Afghans, etc. who get killed by..."us" (Israel, USA, crusaders, Westerners, etc.), well it seems in light of this very real sentiment of empathy and identification that it couldn't hurt if Barack Hussein Obama made a friendly overture to this very loosely identified group of about a half-billion persons.

Maybe there's no payoff at all, but I'm inclined to think that there's some goodwill gained and that lots of Muslims feel less targeted by a US prez whose very name makes him sound like he's one of them. And I mean that in a good way.
