Cohn-Bendit could Beat Bayrou

According to polls. That would be something. And if the Greens and MoDem each get 11%, with the PS taking only 21.5, a Green-MoDem combo of 22% would represent a potent political force and potential for ideological recomposition, to which the PS leadership would do well to pay attention. One can see this as a further breakdown of the old left/right cleavage and the emergence of something new, a "postmodern" cluster of issues centered on the environment, governance style, quality of life, etc. Yuppie or "bobo" politics would be the negative way of putting it. But something is happening in this part of the spectrum.

On the other hand, Dany tutoie François, while François vouvoie Dany (et le traite de pédophile).

Now that François implies Dany is a pedophile, I think Dany'll be going back to vouvoying François.

Oh la la, ch'était chaud che choir comme dirait Valéry.

Yes, I just watched it. I have to agree with Dany: Bayrou was "minable." That was a despicable thing to say.

Daniel Cohn-Bendit, aka Danny the Red, has been involved in far far Left radical politics his whole life. His new gimmick is going Green. ( Green is the new Red!) The accusations of pedophilia are not misplaced; they are sadly very real.

Francois Bayrou addresses him correctly (vous). He is not his copain, his pot, nor is family.

I am not a huge fan of Bayrou politically, but he is a decent and honorable man. Cohn-Bendit is, and has always been, a foul mouthed thug.

The allegations of Cohn-Bendit being involved in pedophile activity come from his own writings, and his own admissions. It is not off-base for Bayrou to bring them up.

ON THE RECORD:

re : Allegations of paedophilia:

Cohn-Bendit worked in the Karl-Marx-Buchhandlung bookshop and ran a kindergarten (of children between five and eight years' old). Later in 2001 he was accused of pedophilia. This accusation was grounded on the following citation from his 1975 book Le Grand Bazar, [1]: "It happened to me several times that certain kids opened my fly and started to stroke me. I reacted differently according to circumstances, but their desire posed a problem for me. I asked them: 'Why don't you play together? Why have you chosen me, and not the other kids?' But if they insisted, I caressed them still.[2]"

On the 31st of January, 2001 in the Berlin newspaper [3] published open letter to Cohn-Bendit from the former German Foreign Minister, Klaus Kinkel, demanding Cohn-Bendit clarify whether there was actual physical contact with the children . The Berliner Zeitung published Cohn-Bendit's response. He said that he was "not aware of the problem" (“das Problem nicht bewusst”). "We tried," ..."a collective discourse of a new sexual morality yet to be defined"( “in einem kollektiven Diskurs eine neue Sexualmoral zu definieren”). The reported sex scenes, were a "me-oriented self-reflection" (“ich-bezogene Selbstreflexion”). Cohn-Bendit, did not say there was no sexual contact with children. When interviewed on the 28th January, 2001 by ”The Observer” [4] Cohn-Bendit told the journalist, “I admit that what I wrote is unacceptable nowadays.”

In the 1980s the Greens experimented with various policies which would decriminalize sex with children. At its national conference in Lüdenscheid (March 1985) the Greens in North Rhine-Westphalia called for "nonviolent sexuality" between children and adults never to be subject to criminal prosecution. In 1987 the policy was " When young people have the desire for older peers outside the family, prevented either because their homosexuality is not accepted by their parents, or because they have pädosexuelle inclinations, be it for other reasons, they must be given the opportunity to do so. " [5].

Cincinna,
I know Cohn-Bendit personally and find your characterization completely off base. He is certainly neither foul-mouthed nor a thug, and if anyone in this campaign has taken the European Union seriously, it's Dany. Nor is his interest in green politics a "gimmick."

That said, I think he could have conducted himself with more dignity in the debate with Bayrou, but there was ample provocation. If Bayrou is an honorable and decent man, why did he suggest collusion between Cohn-Bendit and Sarkozy? If there is one thing Dany is not, it's a stooge of Sarkozy.

I agree that Cohn-Bendit is not a stooge of Sarkozy. Just another aging 60's radical who never grew up and cannot relate to the real world.

His far left radical past, his connection to violent German extremists, and more to the point, the allegations of pedophilia make him a very unsavory character, to say the least.

It is not Bayrou who is minable, but the man who wrote defending the undefensible, engaging in any sort of sexual acts with children.

Dany le Rouge may be a sort of Euro Abbie Hoffman, if you will. But Hoffman never advocated or participated in sex with children, especially students in his care.

These are very serious allegations, and if they were not backed up by Cohn-Bendit's own writings and speeches, it would be beyond the pale to bring it up in an election campaign.

Hoisted on his own petard!

Well, Dany fell in his own trap. If he is clean he should have no problem explaining his writings or at least accept to talk about it.
Bayrou attacks were not very classy, but I am afraid nothing and no one is classy anymore in today's political scene. Dany had been insulting Bayrou for days ("light Le Pen", etc). If Bayrou doesn't counter-attack people would say he's weak and naive, which is deadly in politics. He reacts and he's the bad guy? Give me a break...
