Soyons sérieux

President Obama will be in France for D-Day + 65 years, and all the French media can talk about is how much the American president is annoyed with his French counterpart. The French don't seem to have noticed that Obama will be stopping first in Cairo or that his much-awaited speech to the Muslim world on Arab soil no doubt looms much larger in the minds of American officials than the photo-op in Normandy. Sarkozy may not have done himself any favors with his handling of the visit, but really, in the great scheme of things, it doesn't matter all that much that Barack and Michelle will enjoy a night on the town in Paris without the company of Nicolas and Carla. What Obama says in Cairo will be of historical importance; what he says and does in France will count only for la petite histoire. Soyons sérieux.

Perhaps in an effort to be more serious, France24.com has a piece on its home page right now titled "Obama au Moyen-Orient pour tendre la main au monde musulman."

Call me a recluse and disconnected from French media, but the ruckus between Sarkozy and Obama totally passed under my radar without a beep. There's been Roland Garros, the Girondins' victory, the coming Perpignan-Clermont final, the airplane crash off Brazil, the snub of the Queen, D-Day stories & histories, the Euro elections, and Descoings' little big reform of the high school and young hoods stabbing people but I missed this story between Sarko and Obama.

All politics (and news) is local.

Actually, the Middle East speech was on the front page when I passed the newstand on my way to work this morning, and I've heard the speech discussed in various broadcast media. I don't think it's fair to say that they have forgotten all but the Sarko-Obama spat, though clearly that generates far more interest here than its real news value probably warrants.

And Art, 2009 - 1944 = 65. Saturday will be D-Day plus 65 years...

All right, guys, maybe I was hyperventilating a bit. And oxygen deprivation no doubt explains my arithmetic error.
