Suicide Epidemic? Not so fast ...

And what if there were no epidemic of suicides at France Telecom? Would the media apologize to Didier Lombard, who has looked on the verge of suicide himself lately? Poor fellow. Treated like a serial killer, when all he's trying to do is make a buck. (h/t Kirk)

I had seen something like this some weeks ago and didn't want to comment on it: if you agree, you are a monster, if you disagree, you are deluded. Either way, you will make enemies. On the other hand, hard evidence such as numbers doesn't lend itself to agreement or disagreement. But then, politics and the news cycle...

Yes, I'd seen discussion of this before too and avoided comment for the same reason. But at bottom I'm a numbers guy (ex-mathematician, etc.), and I believe in facing facts. Even if there is no excess of suicides, there may still be stress in the workplace, low morale at France Telecom, etc. etc. But let's all take a deep breath and try to deal with things as they are.
