Justice Charasse

Nicolas Sarkozy will apparently name Michel Charasse to the Conseil Constitutionnel. A former Socialist, Charasse was the court jester at the Court of François Ier. He will bring to the CC a tolerant view of public funding of private education. Perhaps that's the reason for his appointment.

I do love the regal and other analogies. François 1er, Nicolas le Petit, Dominique le Dauphin.. I know nothing of Charasse, but surely our only monarch of the second faith's jester was a certain Jacques Attali !

No, Attali was the Grand Vizir. Took himself far too seriously. Charasse, according to one of FM's biographers, helped to keep the king supplied with chair fraîche, which he found working the cash registers at Auchan and other haunts of le bon peuple.

Is there as much innuendo there as I think there is? Or is tongue firmly in cheek?

I'd better not say unless I can locate the book in which this incident is described.
