Parties and Primaries

Does the advent of the primary election spell the end of political parties as France has known them? That is the thesis of this article.

Certainly primaries will change the nature of the PS; but in presidential elections, the PS and the UMP are already two very different kinds of parties, and the PS model is clearly less effective.

The French election law does not allow wide open primary elections (as they would cost far too much money, compared to the ceiling of a presidential campaign budget : around 20 millions euros, all expenses included, even those paid by members or supporters).

The PS has, imho, no other solution than transform it into some formal electronic vote, prepared by some debates over the internet. No true "primaries" as the US know it, anyway.
