Abstention Could Determine the Outcome of the Presidential Election

As I reported last week, the expected level of abstention in this year's presidential is abnormally high. A new study confirms the one I mentioned previously, and the softness in the center in particular is no doubt alarming to the campaign of Emmanuel Macron. I don't have time to analyze these findings in detail today, but I will return to this topic in the future. It's a new and interesting development in French politics, in which participation in presidential elections has historically been high. Apparently, the decomposition of the party system and the blurring of the left-right divide has left many voters disoriented and unsure which way to turn.

On a more positive note, the praise and support he's gaining from the left to the center-right is very heartening. Delanoë, Villepin, Rue, Ayrault... quite an assortment.

I thought Delanoë made the case for Macron particularly well.

I could be wrong but I seem to remember reading similar articles during the 2012 presidential campaign.

Most people I know don't know who to vote for.

The people on the left don't like Macron. But while they like Hamon and are mad at those who 'disrespect their vote'(in the primary) by not supporting Harmon whereas they had promised to, they think his plan won't clear it in the second round and they might have to 'vote utile ' for Macron... But first round? So, they don't know what to do.

People on the right are disgusted with Fillon sabotaging their boulevard to the presidency. Outside of the cathos and LR party faithful , his support is dwindling. He's definitely not going to make the second round and the fourth place is for him or Hamon. Since LR seems more disciplined than the PS he maywin that bet not much else.
